Primarily known as famous Native American Ethnologist in the later years of his life, La Flesche was in contact with Montezuma in the early stages of the 20th century while he was still working as a clerk in the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Washington D.C. Like Montezuma, La Flesche was sought after by E.L. Choteau to become a forming member of the National Indian Republican Association (NIRA). In writings with Montezuma, La Flesche voiced his unwillingness to join the NIRA and his general distrust in the association as a whole. He told Montezuma that he would not be joining and recommended that Montezuma do the same.
