Gates was a loose correspondent of Montezuma who is most famous for being President of both Amherst College and Rutgers University. Gates sided with Montezuma on many of the political issues plaguing the Indian at the time. He believed the assimilation of the Indian people was necessary for their success in the current society. Being a college president, Gates also thought the mainstream education process for key Native American survival.
