Jones was a long time key correspondent of Montezuma as he was the US Commissioner of Indian Affairs from 1897-1905. Through these years Montezuma grew to be very critical of Jones and the growing Indian Affair policies towards Indian peoples of the times. Jones’ ideologies centered the building of the reservation system and the specialization of Indian boys and girls at a young age. Tensions between Montezuma and the Bureau of Indian Affairs would continue on after Jones left in 1905 and Francis Leupp soon filled his position.
